The island of Aruba took its census in the week of September 29- October 6, 2010. Census moment was at midnight on September 29th. During the 2010 Census, both short and long enumeration forms were used. The long forms were completed using netbooks; short forms were filled in on paper. The long form contained the same questions as the short form, but in addition 30 questions were asked. A CSPRO data entry program was used to gather data with the long form. The digital long forms were used in 70 out of 1,068 enumeration areas (EA). Each enumerator canvassed one EA. Twenty EA's made up one enumeration district (ED). All enumeration activities in the ED's were coordinated by a head enumerator, who was supported by an assistant.
After the census week, field work continued until the 6th of December. Households that were not visited during the census week were enumerated by a special enumeration team, handpicked from the group of enumerators. Digital information from the netbooks was immediately coded, edited and brought together in a national data file. On the occasion of World Statistics Day (20-10-2010), a mere three weeks after the census, the first preliminary results of the census were presented to the general public. Data capturing of the paper forms was done using a combination of optical mark reading, optical character recognition, and imaging. A great deal of attention was dedicated to the coding of education, occupation and industry. Computer aided coding was used to facilitate the coding process. Easy cases were coded by staff members of the CBS. More complex cases were directed to a small group of coding experts.
Data were extensively edited by means of the Census and Survey Processing System (CSPro). Each time a complete EA was captured, a large set of checks were run to detect structure errors, inconsistencies, and non-valid values. At the end of this editing faze, all EA-files were merged into a national census file and additional tests were run on the complete data set. Census tables were constructed using CSPRO. Data were also transferred to SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). All tables were double checked using SPSS and more specialized analyses were conducted. On September 29th 2011, exactly one year after census moment, a set of 103 census tables was released. The selected tables and other pre-defined articles, paper and analysis are downloadable from www.cbs.aw
The information gathered during this project was converted to a format compliant to REDATAM. This technology is used tomake it possible for the web-enduser to create or generate her/his own custom tables. Not all variables are accesable using this application, because of the sensitivity of the information displayed. If you need more information that you can not find here feel free to contact CBS here.
